Total GDI Academy - Off-Season Edition:

Each Monday this section is dedicated to the goaltender of the Academy. Features include updates on group progress, pictures, and videos.     Focus of Having Clairty and Being Self-Motivated:With the average temperature in Winnipeg being around 30 degrees it seems like a no brainer to be outside at the beach or out on the boat at the lake. Spring/summer months are often described as the off season for many sports so it can become increasingly difficult to stay motivated to train when the weather becomes increasingly hotter. This past Monday the 2012 Total GDI Academy started after the long weekend. 30 goaltender now are training each week throughout the next two months until the end of August. Many have begun to call THE RINK their second home as they enter the building 5 days a week. Taking their dreams to the next level and joining the plan that GDI Prairies has laid out for them the goaltenders at the Academy have found one of the biggest factors to staying motivated. Clarity. Dr. Saul L. Miller describes clarity as providing direction and order, and it reducing uncertainty, which many people find stressful. Having a plan set in mind for how to reach your goal(s) will help keep you self motivated and directed. Looking back to one of the morning conditioning sessions this past week one of the focuses that was brought up to the group was to have "self-motivation". Being your own goalie coach. These individuals are the ones that will find success. Remember: Once you have that inner motivation, you will be equipped with desire and a will that will push you further…. even on the most beautiful summer day!

Head over to The Rink Training Centre Blog at www.therink.ca on Wednesday to catch THE WEEKLY WORD for all the news on the players training at the centre!

Ian Clark Hits the Ice for Day Two and Three at the Blue Jackets Development Camp:

Net presence was the focus during the second day, with four goalies each taking their spot between the pipes. The prospect goalies – Anton ForsbergMartin Ouellette and 2012 NHL Draft picks Oscar Dansk and Joonas Korpisalo – were given quite the workout by Blue Jackets goaltending coach Ian Clark on Wednesday. Each young man had the opportunity to work on their skills in finishing and overall speed, and Dansk and Korpisalo in particular benefited from the drills. Dansk particularly caught Clark’s attention. “(Dansk) has tremendous clarity in what he wants to become, and that’s an elite National Hockey League goaltender…he has excelled on the biggest stages and has a great mental makeup for goaltending. He’s a very well-schooled goalie with great positioning and he’s really good athletically,” Clark said. The focus on goaltending is an extension of how the team has addressed their net situation. With the departure of Curtis Sanford, the club traded Sergei Bobrovsky from the Philadelphia Flyers and signed Mike McElhinneyon free agency, all while Steve Mason remains their cornerstone. The emphasis on drafting young goalies like Dansk and Korpisalo shows the club’s need for top talent in net, and giving them a whole practice for themselves allowed them to get a taste of what coaches expect from them in the NHL. College and Pro Skate Taking Off at THE RINK:

Every Thursday evening at The Rink Training Centre players from the Professional and College ranks have been playing 3v3. GDI Goaltenders that have been out in the games include Joe Caliguri, Mark Friesen, and Teagan Sacher. Some of the skaters that hit the ice were Cody Eakin (Dallas Stars), Jason Gregoire (Winnipeg Jets), Mike Hellyer (University of Manitoba), and more. With the ice surface at the training centre being a 3v3 players dream due to the fast and action packed game, it can also be a goaltenders worst nightmare! On the other hand, with GDI Goalies such as Joe Caliguri, Mark Friesen, and Teagan Sacher these games have been fairly low scoring. At a Professional level these 3v3 games are of extreme benefit to improving the little details outside of a systematic approach that help enhance and maintain players skills.   [gallery link="file" columns="6"]

Who Is On The Ice:

During the summer a large focus for our staff is to make sure that each student is learning and detailing their game with new aspects that they may be unaware of. The summer months are important to develop in areas that may not be strong and to add new areas and habits if needed. Upcoming programs that we offer for goaltenders in the next two months include: The Off-Season Total GDI Academy, Prospect Clinics, Summers Camps, Conditioning Sessions, One-on-One Sessions, and Elite Performance Off-Ice training. We cannot stress it enough, the ones that find success are the ones that prepare in detail and have a plan for how they will achieve their goals!
