Steinbach Minor Hockey is sharpening their pencils in preparation for their annual registration Wednesday evening. Parents will not only have the opportunity to sign their kids up for the upcoming hockey season, they will also have a chance to develop their son or daughter's skills by getting them involved in a fall hockey camp. Steinbach Minor Hockey President Jon Sawatzky says he is really excited about their new camps that focus on long term development. “This year we have The Rink [Training Centre] involved, so there is a new organization that will be working with us in skill development. They have done stuff with us before in terms of goalies with their Goalie Development Institute programs. This year we want to role them out into all of our age groups across the board.” The Winnipeg-based hockey school will be bringing their professionals to provide young hockey players from squirts all the way to midget with professional, hands-on training. The Rink's philosophy is that hockey training and development is year-round for athletes who want to learn and compete with the best in the world. “They are going to work with us throughout the year,” says Sawatzky. “This is more of a long term philosophy change for us. In terms of working with kids not just in the fall camp, but getting them ready throughout the year.” Despite all the extra professional training that will be brought in to help players in the southeast, Sawatzky says it won't be expensive. “Our camps are really affordable, depending on the age level it will start at $60 dollars up to just over $100 dollars. Obviously the day camps will be a different expense throughout the year and some of it will probably be on minor hockey's shoulders.” The camps aren't limited to those in the Steinbach catchment area, they are open to everybody. “Our fall camps are not only open to Steinbach players, but to those from all the surrounding communities. We really draw a good range of kids in,” says Sawatzky. Registration for the upcoming hockey season and fall hockey camps will take place Wednesday evening at the Centennial Arena.
